About this coffee

A group of 124 female producers have curated a beautiful blend of washed SHB EP FTO coffee with the assistance of COMAL (Asociación Civil Comercializadora Maya Alternativa). With their support, the producers strive to improve the quality of the coffee and the sustainability of their farms by creating organic fertilizer, participating in workshops on entrepreneurship and financial education, as well as tending to the roots of the coffee plants for health and productivity.

Each producer individually processes and dries the beans on their own small terraces, equipped with pulpers, fermentation tanks, washers and parabolic dryers. COMAL collects the beans from the producers and delivers them to the FECCEG dry mill in Quetzaltenango, where the quality team analyzes each batch. Depending on the quality, the coffee is either stored separately and sold as a micro lot or combined with other coffees from the same producer organization and quality group.

The Farmers

When a bag of COMAL Mujeres is sold, a premium is paid to finance the operations of a mobile medical and dental clinic organized by UNEX. This clinic serves more than 300 local producers every week. The premiums are specifically directed to support women's health initiatives. To ensure these funds are used optimally, UNEX consulted a doctor to determine the most effective approach to promoting women's health in the region. The premiums are also used to provide vitamin tablets containing essential nutrients not found in the producers' diets, thus promoting a healthier lifestyle. Coffee is the primary source of income for the producers, but they also cultivate honey, fruit trees, corn, and beans. They plant trees to maintain biodiversity, preserve groundwater reserves, and create a habitat for a variety of flowers and plants, which in turn increases bee populations and honey production.
