The Benti Nenka washing station is located in the heart of Guji, where a total of 500 farmers deliver red cherries from the surrounding areas. Located about 550 km south of Addis Ababa, the Hambela Wamena woreda is home to a community of smallholder farmers who collectively cultivate 6,000 hectares of coffee. In Guji, the average farm size is three hectares, and farmers grow a variety of heirloom coffees, including wild varieties from the neighboring Harenna Forest. This site emphasizes collaboration with smallholder coffee farmers and vertical integration. The washing station receives cherries from approximately 300 to 500 family farms located at altitudes ranging from 1900 to 2300 meters above sea level. These farmer-owned trees are either inside or around their homes. The cherries are selectively hand-picked by the landowners and their families before being transported to the collection centers. Prior to the start of the harvest, the farmers pay special attention to the preparation of their fields through activities such as weeding, pruning and replacing old trees with new seedlings.
