About this coffee

During our trip to Panama and Costa Rica in March 2022, we stopped at Finca Hacienda La Esmeralda to sample the freshly harvested coffees, including the Geishas which had almost completed their processing. We fell in love with the washed Mario 42 Geisha, which is part of the Esmeralda Special Reserve. This collection has been winning international awards for the past 15 years. Boquete's volcanic soils and the Pacific and Atlantic mists create an optimal environment for Geisha plants, which can be tasted in every cup.

ORIGIN INFO

The Producer

In 2004, the Peterson family of Hacienda La Esmeralda won the BOP (Best of Panama) competition for the first time with a geisha coffee previously unknown in that country, and in the same year set the record for the highest price ever for a coffee paid for at an auction. The geisha plant, which originated in Ethiopia, gained worldwide importance and has since been considered one of the finest and noblest coffee varieties in the world. Only the ripest and reddest cherries are handpicked at Hacienda la Esmeralda. Since not all cherries ripen at the same time, the harvest extends over a long period of time, because a coffee bush is harvested up to ten times. The careful selection of the right coffee cherries guarantees an elegant and complex cup with notes of jasmine, peach and melon. Only recycled water sourced from the highlands near the mill is used in the manufacture of Mario 42. Proceeds from this coffee go to social programs such as a school for the children of traveling pickers and a bonus of at least 30% for all employees.
